Everyone knows that learning a second language is really important nowadays, because of different reasons: have a successful career, help your studies or even for hobby. But what people should know is that learning a new language is so much more than know how communicate with people from other countries or acquire a different vocabulary, for example. Learning a second language means developing new ways of thinking, understanding the world and, in this sense, a new way of seeing the reality around us. In this article, I will talk about some experiences about my English “learning” and how it has influenced my personal life and professional career.

First of all, one of the main benefits of learning a new language is developing self-confidence. The idea here is pretty simple: When we try to reach a new goal and we achieve it, this fact makes us feel good and increases our self-confidence. Then, when we see the results of our effort and our dedication, even if minimal, it ends up encouraging us to learn other things during all our lives.

In my case, I was always interested in learning English, but I didn't know much about this language, so, I decided to start learning it from scratch. I read a lot, because it’s something that I like so much, to find new words and understand some things, but I realized that wasn’t enough. I got a lot of vocabulary, but I didn’t know how to use it. So, I decided to practice the language in the workshops, even though in the beginning speaking a simple dialogue seemed really difficult to me, over time, I developed my speaking skills and nowadays I can communicate easily. With no doubt, seeing that change gave me strength to keep studying the language and improving my learning.

Also, it should be noted that learning another language opens the door to acquire more knowledge. It happens because most of the research and materials available on the Internet are in English and this can be a barrier for those who don’t know the language. Here, I can exemplify it with a fact of my daily life: as a journalism student, it’s always interesting know what’s going on around the world, to produce relevant and current content for the public, that will impact people lives in some way. For this, besides reading the Brazilian newspapers, I also need to take a look at foreign newspapers, which are mostly written in English. This is where my knowledge in the language is fundamental, because besides understanding the news, I can also select, from the information presented, what is the most important and which may become a report, for example.

Anyway, even in my academic life, I need to do researches to understand some subjects or study for works and exams. If I just get stuck in Portuguese, probably I won’t find information that it’s in English, for example, that could help me a lot. In addition, many classic books are also written in another language, as some songs we listen daily. If we stop to think, most of the things in the world, whether business, study or entertainment, is in English nowadays, which makes learning a second language essential. In that sense, speaking another language helps you to be aware about the world around you, because you have access to more information than you normally would.

Todo mundo sabe que aprender uma segunda língua é realmente importante hoje em dia, devido a diferentes razões: ter uma carreira de sucesso, ajudar seus estudos ou até mesmo hobby. Mas o que as pessoas deveriam saber é que aprender uma nova língua é muito mais que saber como se comunicar com pessoas de outros países ou adquirir um vocabulário diferente, por exemplo. Aprender uma segunda língua significa desenvolver novos meios de pensar, entendendo o mundo e, nesse sentido, um novo meio de ver a realidade a nossa volta. Nesse artigo, Eu irei falar sobre algumas experiências sobre meu "aprendizado" no inglês e como isso influenciou minha vida pessoal e carreira profissional.

Em primeiro lugar, um dos principais benefícios de aprender uma nova língua é desenvolver autoconfiança. A ideia aqui é bem simples: Quando nós tentamos alcançar um novo objetivo e alcançamos isso, esse fato nos faz se sentir bem e aumenta nossa auto confiança. Então, quando vemos os resultados de nossos esforços e nossa dedicação, mesmo que mínimo, isso acaba nos encorajando a aprender outras coisas durante nossas vidas.

No meu caso, Eu sempre estive interessada em aprender Inglês, mas eu não sabia muito sobre essa língua, então, eu decidi começar a aprender do zero. Eu li muito, porque isso é algo que eu gosto muito, para encontrar novas palavras e entender algumas coisas, mas eu percebi que não era o bastante. Eu consegui muito vocabulário, mas eu não sabia como usar. Então, eu decidi praticar a língua nas oficinas, mesmo que no começo um diálogo simples parecesse realmente difícil para min, com o tempo, eu desenvolvi minhas habilidades de fala e hoje em dia eu posso me comunicar facilmente. Sem dúvidas, vendo essa mudança me deu forças para continuar estudando a língua e aprimorando meu aprendizado.

Além disso, deve-se notar que o aprendizado de outra língua abre as portas para adquirir mais conhecimento. Isso acontece porque a maior parte das pesquisas e materiais disponíveis na Internet estão em Inglês e isso pode ser uma barreira para aqueles que não conhecem a língua. Aqui, Eu posso exemplificar isso com um fato da minha vida cotidiana: como um estudante de jornalismo, é sempre interessante saber o que esta acontecendo em volta do mundo, para produzir conteúdo relevante e atual para o público, que irá impactar as vidas das pessoas de algum modo. Para isso, além de ser o jornal Brasileiro, eu também preciso de olhar o jornal estrangeiro, o qual são em sua maioria escritos em Inglês. Isso é onde meu conhecimento da língua é fundamental, porque alem de entender as noticias, eu posso também selecionar, entre as informações apresentadas, o que é mais importante e que pode se tornar um relatório, por exemplo.

De qualquer forma, até em minha vida acadêmica, eu preciso fazer pesquisas para entender alguns assuntos ou estudar para trabalhos e exames. Se eu apenas ficar presa a o Português, provavelmente eu não irei encontrar informação que esta em Inglês, por exemplo, que poderia me ajudar muito. Além do mais, muitos livros clássicos estão também escritos em outra língua, assim como algumas musicas que nós escutamos diariamente. Se nós paramos para pensar, a maior parte das coisas no mundo, Seja trabalho, estudo ou entretenimento, esta em Inglês hoje em dia, que faz com que aprender uma segunda língua essencial. Nesse sentido, falar outra língua ajuda você a estar ciente sobre o mundo em sua volta, porque você tem acesso a mais informação que normalmente teria.
